The actor John Cleese has sparked an online row after claiming that London is “no longer an English city”.

In a Tweet sent early this morning to his 5.6 million followers, the Fawlty Towers comedian repeated his 2011 claims about the capital.

Cleese, 79, said that “virtually all” of his friends living abroad agreed with his observation.

He wrote: “So there must be some truth in it.

“I note also that London was the UK city that voted most strongly to remain in the EU”

But the comedian has come under fire for his renewed comments.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan responded to Cleese’s comments in a statement to the Press Association.

Referring to Cleese’s comedy series Fawlty Towers, he said: “These comments make John Cleese sound like he’s in character as Basil Fawlty.

“Londoners know that our diversity is our greatest strength. We are proudly the English capital, a European city and a global hub.”

Other comedians jumped to criticise the Monty Python star on Twitter.

Dom Joly, 51, said: “John Cleese is one of my comedy heroes … Suddenly this thing came out of nowhere and it’s so depressing on so many levels.

“He’s clearly a really smart funny man but it is basically a very racist tweet. Secondly, it’s a racist tweet by a man who lives on a Caribbean island – the irony of that is insane. Even the language is insane, who uses the word opine?”

He’s right, London is loaded with Russians, Chinese and Muslims. It really rips the heart and soul from London. People who could care less about England, or English customs have flooded into London.

Some years ago I opined that London was not really an English city any more

Since then, virtually all my friends from abroad have confirmed my observation

So there must be some truth in it…

I note also that London was the UK city that voted most strongly to remain in the EU

The Monty Python actor also said last year that he was disappointed with Britain, and announced that he would be relocating to the Carribean instead in protest over the “awful” debate on Brexit.

“I’m leaving in November. I actually am leaving. I am making arrangements now. “I am so disappointed with so much about this country at the moment and I just think so much of this country is disappointing,” Cleese said in interview with Newsnight in 2018.

Author and columnist Caitlin Moran added to the Twitter conservation. She wrote: “John Cleese is in the process of moving to Nevis, in the Caribbean.

“I hope there’s a old Nevisian comedian ready to moan about how Charlestown won’t ‘really be a Nevisian town any more.’

“Goddamn immigrants.”

Others were simply confused by his Tweet, posting question marks and asking whether the actor was attempting to be negative or not, whilst the official Leave.EU account praised the 79-year-old, writing: “Bravo to British comedy legend and Brexiteer John Cleese for speaking up about the state of London. The liberal luvvies on Twitter are in meltdown over his refusal to apologise for telling the truth!”
